Tijdens mijn reizen in de VS heb ik vanuit de thuisbasis in South Bend, Indiana al menige Road trips gemaakt in de bijna twee jaar dat ik daar heb vertoeft. De uitgestrektheid en de zovele uiteenlopende diversiteit blijven mij als Amsterdamse nog steeds verbazen, terwijl ik toch wel wat gewend ben. Ik voel me te gast in het land van de Native American. De dead trials en reservaten doet je beseffen wat een leed deze bevolkingsgroep is en nog steeds wordt aangedaan.

*Mijn trip naar South Dakota in maart 2013 was imposant, de prairies met de oneindige vlakte waar je als je je ogen sluit de bizons hoort denderen als in een oud en versleten Hollywood Western, het onverwachte weeromslag van zonnig warm naar een ijzige snow blizzard die me nog meer deed beseffen dat je als mens maar zo nietig bent op die kale uitgestrekte vlakte

Ik heb tijdens deze trip Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa doorkruist.

*Windy City Chicago waar ik altijd op aan vlieg vanuit Amsterdam met zijn wolkenkrabbers en blauwe Shoreline, de drukte, maar vooral de werkelijkheid van het leven in Amerika. Rijkdom en armoede liggen hier zo dicht bij elkaar. De Lake Shore drive langs het mooie onvoorspelbare grillige, licht blauwe Lake Michigan. De vriendelijke bediening en lekkere eten bij Chicago's Joe, waar ik altijd even iets ga eten en drinken bij het inkomen en verlaten van Chicago. Waar ik op mijn leeftijd mijn ID kaart moet overleggen als ik een alcoholisch drankje op O'Hare bestel.

*Detroit de stad van Motown Records, het grote Chrysler imperium met zijn teleurgang en vergane glorie. Met de daaruit voortvloeiende schrijnende armoede en de hoogste misdaad cijfers van de US, De vele voormalig imposante herenhuizen in zwaar verval, dicht getimmerd of nog door de allerarmsten bewoond zonder enig comfort.

*Michigan met naar de staat vernoemde onvoorspelbaar, mooi blauw ruige Lake en zilver (private) stranden en haar vele lighthouses. Weidse en Hollandse bloemkool luchten, pioniers die dachten hun geluk hier te vinden. Dokter Jan Pol de wereld beroemde sympathieke veearts, De Bakkerij gebroeders de Boer in Holland (Michigan) met hun snert, kroketten en beschuit. Waar in mei de tulpen in een festival worden vereerd met klompen dansen omlijst door zeer oud Hollandse liedjes die een glimlach om je mond met een bespottelijk trekje krijgt, omdat het zo vreselijk oubollig is. Oude mensen die vanuit de hele staat uitgedost, al lijkt het carnaval, iedereen willen laten zien dat hun roots in het echte Holland liggen. De prachtige hoge Sleeping Bear Dunes waar je niet echt vanaf wil rennen in 5 minuten en meer dan twee uur duurt mits je in zeer goede conditie en geen hartproblemen hebt. De  vele nationale parken en imposante Mackinac bridge en Island.

*Memphis Tennessee, met de imposante Mississippi River, Beale Street en Graceland. Het glooiende landschap en natuurlijk de Blues muziek.

*Music City Nashville met het Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame, Bull riding, Karaoke, Cowboy laarzen, de Bourbon zuipende Red Neck en de overheerlijke Nashville hete kip. De wereld beroemde Studio's, Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Music City Center.

*Kentucky met zijn wit omrande ranches, de Bourbon Brands van Four Roses, Jack Daniels en de heerlijkste Sushi in Chattanooga.

*Indiana is net zo vlak als, en twee keer groter in oppervlakte als Nederland maar vooral saai. Maar dat wordt gecompenseerd door de Amish met hun witte huizen, Buggy's, de heerlijke gevulde Rise and Roll donuts, goudgele maisvelden, golfbanen en vriendelijkheid. 

*Ohio met zijn vele uitgestrekte boerenlandschappen en een gebied van een grote Amish gemeenschap met zijn lieve kleine gehuchten in een prachtig heuvellandschap.

Pennsylvania met zijn prachtige herfst kleuren pracht. De bergen en het heuvellandschap, mooie steden en de historie van de gewelddadige Burgeroorlog tussen Nord & South in Gettysburg.

*De staat New York met het massale verkeer en als je niet in New York City hoeft te zijn, vermijd het dan ook met een grote boog. New York is het best te bereiken met een vliegtuig en neem daarna dan een taxi, dit is beter voor het heerlijke vakantie gevoel vast te houden zonder stress.

*Connecticut bezit door de kustlijn vele haventjes met historie van de walvisvaart. 

*Rhode Island heeft veel kustlijn en het is er heerlijk te vertoeven.

*Massachusetts de staat met het schiereiland Cape Cod. Het schiereiland is omringt door de Noord Atlantische oceaan en  Cape Cod Bay met stranden die voor iedereen toegankelijk moesten zijn, John Kennedy heeft dit gesteld tijdens zijn periode als President,  De Kennedy's hadden hun domicilie in Hyannis. 

-Provincetown is het noordelijkste plaatsje op het schiereiland en huisvest vele kunstenaars, de meer dan vijftig Galeries zijn een lust voor het oog voor de liefhebber. De vissers varen dagelijks uit om de verschillende vrij goede restaurants te voorzien van verse vis, kreeft en diverse soorten schaaldieren. De grote Gay en Lesbische community maakt de sfeer in tegenstelling tot de andere Amerikaanse steden en staten die ik heb bezocht heerlijk ontspannen, je kunt daar zonder er bij na te hoeven denken jezelf zijn. Voor een geweldige ervaring moet je zeker walvissen gaan spotten in de Stellwagen Bank, deze trips worden aangeboden vanaf de MacMillan pier tussen april en oktober de tochten duren 4 uur.

During my travels to and in the US I have made many Road trips from my home base in South Bend, Indiana. The vastness and the so many different diversity still surprise me as an Amsterdam native, even though I'm used to something. I feel like a guest in the land of the Native American. The dead trials and reservations make you realize what a suffering this population group is and is still being done.

*My trip to South Dakota in March 2013 was impressive, the prairies with the endless plain where when you close your eyes you can hear the bison rumbling like in an old and worn Hollywood Western, the unexpected weather change from sunny warm to an icy snow blizzard that made me realize even more that as a human being you are so insignificant on that bare vast plain

I crossed Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa on this trip.

*Windy City Chicago, which I always fly to from Amsterdam with its skyscrapers and blue Shoreline, the hustle and bustle, but above all the reality of life in America. Wealth and poverty are so close together here. The Lake Shore drive along the beautiful unpredictable whimsical, light blue Lake Michigan. The friendly service and delicious food at Chicago's Joe, where I always stop for a bite to eat and drink when entering and leaving Chicago. Where at my age I have to present my ID card when I order an alcoholic drink on O'Hare.

*Detroit the city of Motown Records, the great Chrysler empire with its disappointment and faded glory. With its resulting grinding poverty and the highest crime rate in the US, the many former imposing mansions are in serious disrepair, boarded up or still inhabited by the poorest without any comfort.

*Michigan with the state named unpredictable, beautiful blue rugged Lake and silver (private) beaches and its many lighthouses. Wide and Dutch cauliflower skies, pioneers who thought to find their happiness here . Doctor Jan Pol the world famous sympathetic vet, De Bakkerij de Boer brothers in Holland (Michigan) with their chowder, croquettes and rusks. Where in May the tulips are honored in a festival with clog dances framed by very old Dutch songs that put a smile on your face with a ridiculous puff, because it is so terribly old-fashioned. Old people dressed up from all over the state, even if it seems like carnival, want to show everyone that their roots lie in the real Holland . The beautiful high Sleeping Bear Dunes that you don't really want to run from in 5 minutes and takes more than two hours if you are in very good shape and have no heart problems. The many national parks and imposing Mackinac bridge and Island.

*Memphis Tennessee, with the imposing Mississippi River, Beale Street and Graceland. The rolling landscape and of course the Blues music.

*Kentucky with its white-rimmed ranches, the Bourbon Brands of Four Roses, Jack Daniels and the most delicious Sushi in Chattanooga.

*Indiana is just as flat as, and twice as large in area as, the Netherlands, but mostly boring. But that is compensated by the Amish with their white houses, Buggies, the delicious stuffed Rise and Roll doughnuts, golden yellow cornfields, golf courses and friendliness.

*Ohio with its many vast farmlands and an area of ​​a large Amish community with its sweet little hamlets in a beautiful hill country.

Pennsylvania with its beautiful fall color splendour. The mountains and the hills, beautiful cities and the history of the violent Civil War between North & South in Gettysburg.

*The state of New York with the massive traffic and if you don't need to be in New York City avoid it by a wide berth as well. New York is best reached by plane and then take a taxi, this is better for the wonderful holiday feeling without stress.

*Connecticut has many harbors with whaling history through its coastline.

*Rhode Island has a lot of coastline and it is wonderful to stay.

*Massachusetts the state with the Cape Cod Peninsula. The peninsula is surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay with beaches that should be accessible to everyone, John Kennedy stated this during his time as President, The Kennedys had their domicile in Hyannis.

-Provincetown is the northernmost town on the peninsula and is home to many artists, the more than fifty Galleries are a feast for the eyes for the enthusiast. The fishermen set sail daily to supply the various fairly good restaurants with fresh fish, lobster and various types of shellfish. The large Gay and Lesbian community makes the atmosphere in contrast
